A quick service and good treatment are important to feel comfortable in a restaurant, but a colorful dish and pleasure to your palate is vital to feeling happy mealtimes.
When I dispatched a hanger steak back to the kitchen at Lola Bistro for further grilling, a $12 plate of cured meats with condiments arrived, gratis, to tide me over.
It was a thoughtful gesture, the kind successful restaurants can make — though I’m not sure it would happen to you. Then again, chef Michael Symon’s artsy eatery earned 28 points in Zagat’s latest survey, a grade that means food and service are “extraordinary to perfection.” So, it could happen.
A diligent staff of servers otherwise appeared dedicated to keeping the customers around me happy.
The hanger steak ($18), once returned, was terrific — the meat slathered with spicy green salsa, littered with arugula, and laying on a mattress of Lola fries under a fried-egg blanket. It was a mound of vertical eating pleasure.
The dish was also characteristic of nearly everything I sampled over two visits, delivering loads of flavor in a direct and uncomplicated format.
